The frontier of mobility lies between the ground and the sky. Discover how Atsushi Ogawa, Head of the Advanced Research Center of Excellence at ‪@Honda‬ R&D, utilizes Cadence CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to bridge the gap between aesthetic styling and extreme aerodynamic performance for the next generation of electric vehicles and eVTOL aircraft.

In the transition to electric vehicles, the logic of design shifts from managing internal combustion heat to maximizing battery range. Every micro-adjustment to the exterior styling has a profound impact on the design's efficiency. Ogawa-san explains that a mere one-millimeter change in exterior design can drastically alter drag reduction results. Traditional physical testing is too slow and costly to validate these minute iterations. Cadence CFD provides the "guaranteed accuracy" required to solve the computational fluid dynamics of high-speed airflow, allowing Honda to optimize styling while maintaining the minimum possible drag coefficient

The development of a flying car (eVTOL) introduces a layer of physical complexity far beyond traditional automotive design. The software must handle hundreds of thousands of complex calculations to ensure stability across three critical flight regimes :

1. Hover Mode : Managing the high-pressure downdrafts from vertical rotors.

2. Transition Mode : Solving the interference logic between rotors and wings as the aircraft rotates for forward flight.

3. Cruise Mode: Optimizing for maximum lift-to-drag ratios at high altitudes.

The airflow around an eVTOL is highly non-linear, with significant rotor-wing interference. Utilizing Intelligent System Design principles, Honda R&D uses the CFD tool to solve detailed flow physics that would be invisible to the human eye, ensuring performance is guaranteed from takeoff to landing.
