Power BI Templates, secondary reports and maintaining standards
Secondary, Lite or Thin reports must be at the heart of your Power BI strategy if you're going to be successful, but how can we push standardisation and make it as easy as possible for people to do the right things? Let's look at the concepts and do some simple demonstrations today.
Templates make is incredibly easy for people to just click and start building, the "How do I connect" questions are gone and other questions can be embedded within the template. "What colour should I use for..." or "Which icons go with what type of button?"
Using a specific folder for measures makes things easier as well as being able to identify things that only exist in the secondary report makes life much easier.
Finally, when you embrace the idea of using Secondary reports, the importance of your Semantic Model becomes clear. It must be preserved and protected to benefit ALL the reports that use it, so we must wrap Change Management and governance around it. DevOps and CI/CD also work, but they rapidly fail when you have a significant level of secondary reports, these must become disposable and be treated as important but not governed as much as possible so you do not overburden your administration.
