Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia the five-man Tams first charted in 1962 with the Joe South song, “Untie Me”. The following year they signed with ABC and were back on the Hot-100 with “What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am)”. This title was also a cut on their first LP, “Presenting The Tams”, which was recorded at the Fame studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Other tracks included the double sided follow-up, “You Lied To Your Daddy”/”It’s All Right (You’re Just In Love)” and the Tommy Roe penned, “You Might As Well Forget Him”.
The song’s writer, Dan Penn was one of the most acclaimed of the 60s, penning such hits as “I’m Your Puppet” and “Out Of Left Field”, both with Spooner Oldham. Dan released “Close To Me” as a 45 on the Fame label, also in 1964.
