What are angels and what do they do?
The angels appear often throughout the Bible. What exactly are they and how do they differ from humans and animals?
What do angels do?
As St. Augustine once said: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit', from what they do, 'angel.'"
1) Angels send messages. The word angel comes from the Greek word "angelos" or "aggelos," which means "messenger." Simply put, the angels are messengers from God.
The angels carry out their role as messengers often throughout the entire Bible. They often appear in human form and usually they are described as having wings.
2) Angels sing praise to God in heaven.
3) Angels serve God in various ways.
What are angels?
1) By their nature an angel is a purely spiritual being. While humans are composed of both body and spirit, the angels are only spirit and do not have bodies.
2) Like humans, the angels were created by God.
3) Like us, they have intellect and free will. Satan and demons are fallen angels who freely chose to turn away from God.
There are various groups or orders and grades of angels described in the Bible: angels, archangels, seraphim, cherubim, thrones, powers, dominions, and principalities. Among the angels are our guardian angels, the angels whose role it is to protect and guide us in our journey towards heaven. The angels also join us in the liturgy in singing praises to the Lord God in heaven.
