Some of the most frequent everyday negotiations for us are with friends and family. How to convince a loved one to support you in doing something - or to get them to do something? We cover some techniques to persuade someone who may be in an emotional mood, or have preconceived notions, or may just be too familiar with you to respect you.

In this video, we cover four techniques, in specific, to better persuade friends and family members:
The first is to be more stubborn. That is, you want to show that you will not be stopped or intimidated. You can persist politely, but you must show that you will persist more than them. Many people - especially family members such as parents - persuade just by accusation, shaming and intimidation. If you show you resist it, they have no other weapons;
The second is to have their best interests at heart. People know when you're saying something just for your own sake, or when you care about them and have their best interests at heart. By communicating and persuading with things that are really for their own good, even if they don't accept them right away, they will be more easily persuaded by them;
Reshaping objections is another technique. That is, when they object to something, there's usually a deeper reason. If you can get to that deeper reason, you can usually deal with that reason instead of the surface thing. The more you know about them, the better this works;
Finally, use personal boundaries. Not all arguments are worth having, and not all discussions are acceptable. By telling the person when you don't tolerate a certain statement, or when you don't tolerate them questioning you on a specific topic, you set acceptable standards and end certain types of arguments before they even begin;
