When you find yourself in the process of making a song it’s possible to do everything right on a track-by-track basis only to clip (exceed 0) on the master. Or maybe you have a son or daughter who has the habit of walking in and pulling up faders on your midi controller. Or maybe there’s just a glitch in your DAW or plugin that spikes the audio to an unholy level. Whatever the reason most people will recommend that you put some form of peak limiter on your master track right from the start. It’s in no way designed to change or process your music rather to protect your ears and speakers from damage in the case of an error or mistake.
The peak limiter does exactly what it sounds like. Anytime a signal crosses a user defined value (threshold) it automatically turns (in some cases YANKS) it down to another value (output). We’ll talk about how this device is different from digital distortion and the settings to use for limiting unintentional volume spikes.
