Shooting Outdoor Studio Portraits on Film
Wow a 14 minute video? What's this?
Yes. It's a 14 minute video where we tried to shoot portraits, "studio style" outdoors.
We brought along a crappy muslin cloth, light stands and some LEDs. We brought along 35mm & medium format cameras, and I think overall the 2 portrait sessions turned out better than expected...?
We don't own a car [for those of you watching that are unaware, "Singapore "remains the most expensive place in the world to buy and run a car", according to a 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)"] so carrying the equipment around in random tote bags was a terrible experience.
Anyway, we didn't prepare for the problems that came our way during the portrait sessions.
Problem 1: Strong Winds
We had no sandbags or weights to hold down the backdrop or the light stands. Things kept tipping over and at some point we gave up lifting the backdrop back up.
Problem 2: Rain
It didn't really rain over us, but there was a slight drizzle during the day. We forgot our umbrellas, so we put a plastic bag over the video camera.
Problem 3: Heat
The humid weather here in SG sucks and we didn't have a portable fan.
Problem 4: Props
Not like we wanted comedic masks or satin sashes as props, but we forgot to bring a stool/chair on both occasions.
Overall, it was fun and I like some of the photos I took that day. The entire experience could be easily improved through the use of an automobile for transport to further, more interesting locations. Also, I have a 2m long paper backdrop that we couldn't bring along.
