Could you do it? How does it feel? I write about the role of your VAGUS NERVE in this phenomena in the Respiratory System section of SCIENCE OF YOGA (http://www.scienceof.yoga). Think of trying the 4:8 breath right now as a mini experiment.
Here is what is happening: Basically, during EVERY exhale, your vagus nerve sends a signal down directly to your heart and with EVERY exhale:
🌬Your heart rate goes down slightly
🌬Your blood pressure goes down slightly
🌬You go slightly into a parasympathetic response (aka the relaxation response)
So, by elongating your exhales, you enhance these effects!
This is a great way to lower your blood pressure at the doctors office, ease anxiety when you feel your heart racing in traffic when you are already late, or whenever you need it!
