Power BI 101 - Calculation Groups, Field Parameters and TMDL - Week 7
Time Intelligence can require a lot of skills to write the measures, it also requires a standard pattern, within Power BI when we have those standard patterns, we can use Calculation Groups to stop us having to write multiple versions of the same measure. A calculation group will hold the Items that can then be expressed for any measure passed into the Calculation Group.
Field Parameters can then also be leveraged to simplify the process of setting up which measure to use with a Calculation Group by enabling your audience to select a measure using a slicer. Additionally, different axis can also be selected using Field Parameters.
Finally, TMDL (Tabular Model Definition Language) has now been added to Power BI, this is still an emerging element of the platform, but one of the most powerful features is the ability to transfer complex items between Power BI Models using a simple copy and paste. In our example we set up and import a more advanced Time Intelligence Calculation Group, but we could also perform the same with a Calendar (check out Github below).
