WWF recently commissioned a study on the financial flows in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region. Conducted by the international consulting firm, Profundo, the study revealed that current loan and investments patterns are heavily weighted towards potentially unsustainable commercial activities. Moreover, most regulators do not require financial institutions to have policies in place to safeguard marine ecosystems and local livelihoods from ocean-related risks of unsustainable financing decisions, and few financial institutions are taking the initiative in this regard.
