Toruń is the MOST beautiful Polish city.
It is almost 800 years old - one of the oldest, most beautiful, historical cities in Poland. It is known for its extraordinary monuments, recognized by UNESCO as the cultural heritage of mankind, as well as for its turbulent and rich history. It is famous for Nicolaus Copernicus and gingerbread. The city now boasts almost 1000 protected monuments, from churches and blocks of flats to a distinctive street plan that preserves the magnificence of the former Teutonic stronghold.

Toruń was founded by the Teutonic Knights in December 1233. The city is situated on the Vistula and the Drwinka rivers. It is the second biggest town in the Province of Kujawy and Pomerania. The origin of its name is not precisely known. One version is that it comes from the Teutonic stronghold Toruń in the Holy Land, or from the word Tor, which means the gateway to Prussia.
The town owes its development and wealth to its good location on the Vistula River. At the time when most Torunians spoke German, Toruń was nicknamed the Queen of the Vistula.
The Crooked Tower or the Falling Tower is a distinctive place in Toruń. It used to be even a women's prison. The tower is tilted about 1.4 m from the vertical. The tower probably gave the town its name.
The granaries of Toruń are one of the oldest monuments of its kind in Poland. There were about 30 granaries in the Old Town of Toruń, and during the heyday of the grain trade in the 17th century there were over a hundred of them.
Gingerbread is the undoubted symbol of Toruń. The most famous Toruń delicacy has more than 700 years of tradition. For baking they use a one-of-a-kind honey, which is collected only on the Vistula River in the vicinity of the city. Since 2002, a gingerbread festival has been held in Toruń in June.
The Monastery Gate was built in the 14th century as one of four gates leading into the city from the port of the Vistula River.
You can admire the panorama of the Vistula River at the Naval Officers' Square. To commemorate this, there's a mortar bomb in the middle of the square instead of a flowerbed.
River Gate. With one side overlooking the port and the other on the street leading to the parish church of St. Janów and Old Town Square, this gate was the most important entrance to the city. It was here, with the sound of the great Tuba Dei bell, that the Polish kings arriving in Toruń were solemnly welcomed. The biggest medieval bell in Poland is in Toruń. It is housed in the bell tower of the Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist basilica and has been since 1500. It was rung when kings entered the city. It has a unique, unique sound, because it is made of an alloy of copper, gold and silver. It takes six to eight people to ring the bell.
Dąbskiego Palace is a richly decorated baroque building. It was built by Stanislav Dąbski, the bishop of Kujawy in 1693. Nowadays it is the Kujawy and Pomerania Musical Theatre. The area around the River Gate is the only place within the city walls where you can see the 15th century clock.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Toruń. One of the oldest churches of the former Teutonic State is the Gothic parish church of St. Janów. Its construction took more than 200 years.

Today a bronze statue of a cute donkey stands on Żeglarska Street, on the site of a former pillar that was used to punish naughty townsfolk.

The jewel in the crown of the Old Town Market is the Old Town Hall. It was built gradually over the 13th and 14th centuries and got its present appearance at the end of the 14th century thanks to an extensive reconstruction carried out by a Polish town architect, Andrzej, between 1391 and 1399.
The monument to the rafters is related to the legend of poor Ivo, who came to Toruń at a time when the city was overrun by frogs.
One of the craters on the moon is called Copernicus, one of the asteroids on Mars is named Copernicus, and the artificial element Copernicus (Cn) is named after him.
Which house exactly the great scientist lived in is much harder to say. The fact is that the Copernicus family belonged to the richest families in the city and owned several houses.
Bridge Gate is the "youngest" of the surviving gates; it was built in 1432 by the city architect Hans Gotland.
