There are hundreds of videos on how to do an ice bath. There's only one article that instructs you on how to do it safely. https://www.morozkoforge.com/post/ice...

In this video, Navy SEAL Justin Hoagland demonstrates the controlled breath, relaxation technique that strengthens the parasympathetic nervous system and builds psychological resilience. Then, he does something that you should never try at home.

He does an extended, face down breath hold in the ice water. Justin's SEAL training has prepared him for the extraordinary control necessary to perform this dangerous demonstration of self control, and without that training, this face-down breath hold is unsafe. Submersion of your face in cold water will activate an involuntary dive reflex that may cause your heart to skip a beat or you to lose consciousness. Remember that with your nose and mouth underwater, you are unable to use breathing to gain control of our body's natural panic response.

In particular, hyperventilation should NEVER be combined with cold water immersion. Scott Carney has documented at least 17 deaths among people who have combined hyperventilation with underwater breath holds.

Focus instead on the beginning of the video, where Justin demonstrates the type of controlled, structured, easy breathing that calms his nervous system in the cold water.
