Iceland volcano: Fagradalsfjall August 2022 Reykjanes peninsula
The Reykajanes peninsula in Iceland woke up with frequent volcanic and seismic activity in March 2021. Less than a year after the eruption at Geldingadalir went dormant, a fissure opened up at Meradalir (also at Fagradalsfjall) in August of 2022. While the March 2021 eruption lasted for several months, Meradalir only lasted for 3 weeks. Several earthquakes rocked the area prior to the eruption and has been speculated to be the beginning of an active period of volcanic activity. The Reykjanes peninsula is a short drive away from the Keflavik airport and Iceland's capital of Reykjavik. The hike to both eruption sites is very rugged and continues for several miles up hilly, challenging, and rocky terrain and is rated as strenuous.
