Alexander, my nephew, who lives in Florida, sent me an image of their new born baby. His face is adorable. On a rainy day I couldn't think of anything to do than pull out my sketchbook and pencils and try to recreated his lovely face. I making some new characters for a short animated feature film.
To make an anime, painted with copic color markers, that Japanese old art; splash some color onto an acid ingested paper while looking at an unremarkable photograph.
I did not want a realistic photo reproduction. Hey, That's why we have cameras. Don't we?
I am in love
Photography, but there is something truly magical about grabing a piece of carbon or graphite and start scribbling away onto a imperfect piece of paper. A crumpled paper. I believe everyone should try it.
A few years ago, my friend Phil Jones got me some handcrafted paper from Italy,
It's still seating on my desk. I feel intimidated by it. It's too perfect. It's interesting in it's own right.
I have have been experimenting with the new Samsung Galaxy note 7 stylus. They said it has over 40,000 pressure points. It's definitely worth trying it, I like it, but make no mistake, it can't compare to a graphite pencil or a real brush. The competition comes from a higher place.
It's like asking a musician to play Rachmaninnof wearing rubber gloves. Expression should be unrestrained, free of complexity. Anime, or short for animation, are cartoon characters from Japan. I don't really see much difference from any other cartoons. I am not even sure if I like them but, they're definitely fresh and vibrant, like the Johann Sebastian Bach Brandenburg concerto.
