The official daily prayer of the Catholic Church is called the Liturgy of the Hours.

It gets that name "hours" because there are multiple times (hours) throughout the day to pray.

The Liturgy of the Hours also goes by the name "Divine Office," which essentially means "holy duty" or "holy work." Liturgy is a word that means "work."

Every priest, deacon, monk, and nun prays at designated times throughout the day using a book (or these days apps and websites) to pray in unison.

Lay people are welcome to join in as well during any or all of these prayers.

Each set of prayers do not last a full hour and do not need to be prayed at specific hours anymore. The specific times vary depending on the community in which they are prayed.

Here are the moments to pray throughout the day with their Latin names and general times:

Morning Prayer (Lauds): 6:00am
Mid-Morning Prayer (Terce): 9:00am
Midday Prayer (Sext): Noon
Mid-afternoon Prayer (None): 3:00am
Evening Prayer (Vespers): 6:00pm
Night Prayer (Compline): 9:00pm

At each one of these times the prayers include hymns, Scripture readings, Psalms, and other prayers.

The two most important prayers are Morning Prayer (Lauds) and Evening Prayer (Vespers).
