Gene Wilder directing a radio-play-as-movie. Dom DeLuise riffing an Ethel Barrymore impression (see: THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE). And with some borrowing from THE OLD DARK HOUSE--right down to Aunt Kate's wild "Painted women" monologue at the top of the stairs--this movie gives us another spin on the creepy mansion genre with a '30s comedy mood. Doesn't really work as any of these, but it has a knack for atmosphere and is charming in its own way.
1986. Dir./wri. Gene Wilder (co-wri. Terry Marsh). Starring Gilda Radner, Jonathan Pryce, Paul L. Smith, Peter Vaughn, and Bryan Pringle as the dotty butler. Art dir. Alan Tomkins. Music by John Morris. Dir. photography Fred Schuler.
