Major X1.8 & X1.4 Solar Flares | Oct 9, 2024
An X1.8 solar flare was unleashed off the solar corona at 01:55 UTC Oct 9th and was directly Earth-facing sunspot region 13848. Associated with this event was a type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 5176 km/s. A spectacular fast moving Coronal Mass Ejection has followed this eruption and will have a earth-bound component. A potential G4 Class geomagnetic storm is possible late Oct 10 and Oct 11 where strong aurora should be visible mid to high latitudes. An S2 radiation storm is in progress as particles ripped away from the eruption site.
A second X-Flare also occurred later on the same day, Oct 9th from near departing active region 13842, the Coronal Mass ejection that followed is faint and well west of the Earth position and will not have an earth directed component. More flares are expected as Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS ion tail moves through and past Mercurys orbit. Solar activity should be at very high levels the next three to four days.
