There are many symbols for the Virgin Mary, Mother of God within the Bible and Christian artwork throughout the Church’s history.

Here are the most common Catholic symbols for the Virgin Mary:

Flowers - Many flowers have been used to refer to the Virgin Mary, especially the lily (a symbol of immaculate purity at the Annunciation) and the rose (the queen of flowers for the queen of heaven).

Fleur-de-lis - The fleur-de-lis is a stylized lily that refers to the Virgin Mary.

Immaculate Heart of Mary - The immaculate heart of Mary is shown with one or seven swords piercing the heart in connection with the Seven Sorrows of Mary in the Bible.

M - There have been many different stylized M’s in reference to Mary especially with the cross (miraculous medal), a crown (Queen of Heaven), or an A & M (Ave Maria).

Stars - A reference to the woman clothed with the sun and a crown of twelve stars in the Book of Revelation (Rev 12).

Pear - Saint Elizabeth exclaimed to Mary, “blessed is the fruit of your womb.” A pear is often used as a symbol for the fruit of Mary’s womb.
