Retinal detachment is one of the most frequent pathologies in the Oftalvist Retina Unit.
A retinal detachment is a separation of the neurosensory retina (inner layer of the retina) from the pigment epithelium (outer layer of the retina) caused by the accumulation of fluid between them.
If left untreated, retinal detachment ends up causing total functional loss of the eye (blindness) and therefore requires immediate intervention.
The treatment of retinal detachment is always surgical and will depend on the phase of the detachment.
