This is Matt Crawford, and this is a very straightforward video on how to use communities on X, formerly Twitter. You may have seen community posts appearing in your feed, especially if you follow certain communities. If you’re part of any, their posts will show up regularly. I’m not currently following many, so my feed doesn’t have them yet, but I’ll walk you through how to find, join, and interact with communities on X.
Communities can be found in the left-hand menu under "Communities," just below the "Jobs" section. Clicking on it brings up a feed of different community groups that you might be interested in. These groups are centered around various topics, such as technology, AI, startups, and even hobbies like dogs or Arsenal FC. Essentially, communities function as topic-specific groups where people gather to discuss shared interests.
If you're unsure which community to join, you can browse through the recommended ones. There are a variety of subjects—technology, AI, fintech, entertainment, and more. Another way to find relevant communities is by using the search bar. For example, if I type in "startups," I get a list of different startup-related communities, some focusing on specific regions like Africa or India, and others covering broad startup discussions.
One thing to note is that while you can see posts from communities in your feed, you can’t interact with them unless you’re a member. You might have noticed a post going viral but found that you couldn’t reply to it. That’s usually because it was posted within a community that you haven’t joined. You’ll see the name of the community at the top of the post, but unless you’re a member, commenting or engaging with the post won’t be possible.
To demonstrate, let’s check out the "Build in Public" community, which is quite popular among startup founders and entrepreneurs. It currently has around 80,000 members. When I click to join, I get a list of community-specific rules in addition to X’s general platform guidelines. These are created by the moderators who run the community. After agreeing to the rules, I’m now a member and can fully engage with posts within the community.
To show the difference, let me leave the community for a moment. Now, when I revisit posts from "Build in Public," I can still see them, but the reply option is grayed out. This restriction applies to all communities on X—you can view posts, but you can’t engage unless you're a member.
Communities are also a powerful way to grow your presence on X. If you actively participate in discussions, people in your niche will start recognizing you, engaging with your posts, and possibly following you.
