New laws imposed by mainland China in Hong Kong
The national security law imposed on Hong Kong by mainland China came into force on July 1, 2020.
The law gives the authorities new powers to punish "crimes of secession, subversion, organization and commission of terrorist activities, and collusion with a foreign country or with outside elements to endanger national security" in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
This new security law has drawn criticism in Hong Kong and in some countries of the world, they claim that it could infringe human rights and freedom of expression.
