How to Use Forums for Easy and Free Keyword Research

0:30 - Tactic for today
A lot of times when people are approaching keyword research, they go onto YouTube, they learn about all the different tools like Keywords Everywhere, SEMRush, Ahrefs, and they use the keyword tools in those respective tools. However, what the challenge is that everybody is looking at those same tools.
And oftentimes, there can be some low-hanging fruit in terms of keywords that exist from forums.
1:35 - How exactly do we use this tactic
The first thing you want to do is you want to start on Google and search for your particular niche along with the word forums.
So in this situation, I'm going to imagine that I am building a site around all things cars. So I'm going to search for something like car talk forums.
From here, what I can actually see is that there's a community called car talk forum, and you can see that this site is around car advice, tips, troubleshooting, as well as answers to your car questions.
The purpose of this first step in the process is just to identify what are some of the popular sites that are talking about the niche that I'm interested in.
3:17 - How do we apply this tactic to keyword research
Well, the best way to do that is to combine your knowledge of search operators within Google.
So in this situation, I'm going to use these search operators in order to dig into these forums and find exactly the sorts of things that are really interesting to me for keyword research.
If I start with the car talk community, what I can do is I can pull the URL and then use the site operator of site: community.cartalk.com, and run through the five W's and how. So who, what, where, when, why and how.
So just by using the search operator, I can see that people have searched for questions.
5:10 - Digging into potential content ideas for cars
For this question on what is engine performance restoration service, you can see that there are tons of people talking about what that exactly is. So this engagement is really high in this case, and what this signals to me is that a lot of people have interest around this topic.
What that probably means is that this would actually be a really good content idea. If I was building a car website, I could essentially create a long form content piece that better organized this answer to this question than this forum post.
7:34 - Next steps
Well, what we would do is we would just simply go through the top three to five forums in our particular niche and go through the who, what, where, when, why, and how questions.
Those are always the easiest places to start, because those are legitimate questions that people are going onto forums and asking.
You can then research, either, those topics and prioritize for yourself which one of these topics are more interesting.
9:29 - Digging into the Reddit forum
From here, I just do site:reddit.com/r/cars and then I go to the same approach. I just searched for what, and so what you can see here is that there are all these questions that people have asked, and then you can start to prioritize things based off of which ones are getting the most responses or which ones are getting the best views.
From there, you can start to figure out which sorts of long tail keyword phrases to go after.
