As the use of personal computers became more prevalent, the networking industry grew quickly. People realized that they needed a way to exchange information between PCs without having to be computer science majors. This resulted in the development of the network operating system. As we've learned, the network operating system is the software that manages the relationship between network resources and users.

There are two primary parts of most network operating system: the server and the client. The server is just a very powerful PC where the shared network resources reside. The client part of the NOS runs on the individual PCs and allows the user to access shared resources on the server. A NOS is designed to make access to the network resources appear to the user as if the files were on his or her own computer. By making access to shared resources easier, networks grew from just an optional feature in large companies to what is considered a requirement today.

Network operating systems contributed a great deal to the PC and networking industries by making networking easier and less expensive than it had been in the past.
