How does a person drown?
Sudden submersion and panic reaction: Unexpected submersion in water often causes panic, leading to disorganized and unsystematic movements, which aggravate the situation.
Instinctive breath-holding: A person instinctively holds their breath when submerged, preventing water from entering the airways. The effectiveness of this mechanism depends on the individual's physical condition and level of psychological stress.
Decreased Buoyancy: As the lungs become depleted of air, buoyancy decreases, causing a person to gradually sink.
Hypoxia and Hypercapnia: Depletion of oxygen stores leads to hypoxia—a decrease in blood oxygen levels—while carbon dioxide levels increase (hypercapnia), impairing brain and vital system function.
Unconsciousness: Without prompt assistance, a critical decrease in brain oxygen levels can lead to loss of consciousness, increasing the risk of water aspiration.
Laryngospasm: A reflex spasm of the larynx caused by water ingestion can temporarily block airflow, preventing drowning but also making breathing difficult.
Water Aspiration: If laryngospasm is relieved or does not occur, water begins to enter the lungs, directly leading to drowning.
