Tomo is a great guitarist, and he was John Mayer's guitar teacher.
Prince was 12 years old when he moved in with his best friend Andre Cymone. Prince's life at home had been very difficult. Andre's mother Bernadette Anderson grew up in a foster home, so she felt a lot of sympathy for people who were suffering. She told Prince and Andre that they could practice music as much as they wanted, as long as they got good grades. So they got good grades.
The Minneapolis sound was born in Bernadette's house.
In September 2024, the street was renamed Bernadette Anderson Way.
Andre said Prince kept his side of the basement in immaculate condition. Prince became obsessed with TV shows such as Happy Days and Barney Miller. Andre yelled: We're never gonna become rock stars if you keep watching that stuff!
Prince lived in Bernadette's house for 6 years. Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and other kids were in and out of the house, having fun and playing music.
Prince and Andre first spoke to each other while in gym class. They soon discovered that they had a mutual love for music. And they found out that their fathers had been in a band together.
Years later, Andre married Jody Watley. They had a son. Andre produced and wrote songs for Jody, Tom Jones, Adam Ant, and many others.
Andre was Prince's touring bass player from 1977 to 1980. Prince stole one of Andre's bass riffs for Prince's brilliant 1981 song Controversy. As repayment, Prince gave Andre the great song The Dance Electric. Andre's version of The Dance Electric reached number 10 on the R and B charts. Prince's version was released in 2015, on the Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded Edition.
In 1971, Prince's cousin Charles "Chazz" Smith started a band consisting of Prince, Andre, Andre's sister Linda, William Astaire "Hollywood" Doughtry, and Charles. After awhile, Morris Day replaced Charles on drums.
In 1975, Pepe Willie (ex husband of another of Prince's cousins) started the band 94 East, which consisted of Prince, Andre, and Colonel Abrams.
In 1981, Prince put The Time together. Prince wrote all of their songs, and played all of the instruments on their albums. Prince had a clause in his Warner Brothers contract, which allowed him to develop other acts. The Time gave Prince an outlet for music in the style of his earlier albums.
Morris Day said: I'm a drummer, not a singer! What do I do while I'm singing?
Prince said: Act like me!
Time member Jerome Benton co starred in Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon. Jerome and Prince are very funny in Cherry Moon.
Time members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote and produced music for many artists, such as Janet Jackson, Alexander O'Neal, and others.
