How do you start a pitch? Well, the start is very important. We all make judgements quickly. Whether we like you, whether we don’t like you. So, getting that right is critical. One of the techniques you can use is to ask questions. So that you get to know the person that you’re pitching to understand them, and really be sincere in the way you ask those questions. And that’s one of the top techniques that we use when we’re coaching our clients.
When you’re pitching for investment, for example, it’s critical to make a connection with the people you’re talking to. So, decide how am I going to connect with them? Is it as investors? Is it as potential customers of the business? And reach out to them in a human way and make sure they’re listening to you and make sure they’re listening to what comes next.
If you’re pitching for business, the most important thing is to understand what the audience is interested in, what the prospect is interested in. So, you want to ask them: why did they accept the meeting? What is it about your company, your product, your service that excites them and interests them? Because that information gives you material to tailor the rest of what you say in the interests of the audience. That’s how you have a successful pitch.
