If you want some tips on rehearsing a talk, I often go back to the old BBC motto. Make sure that you inform, you educate, and you entertain. You need all three elements of that in a talk to make it interesting.
The best way to rehearse a talk is to not try and do everything at once, it’s to break it up into obvious sections like your introduction, which is hugely important. Practise that, speak it out loud, when you’re in the bath start talking, play with your voice like a violin, shout, restrain your voice. I mean, obviously, if you’re being recorded, you don’t want to be projecting your voice. If you sound like you’ve had elocution lessons, then that would sound false. But just keep practising all the time, in the mirror, in the bath. And in front of zoom or whatever.
If you’re giving a talk and the stakes are high, you want to rehearse and make sure you get it right. So, assemble a small example audience, somebody who can really feed back to you. Ideally, two or three different people so that they can tell you what they make, what are they remembering, what’s sticking with them and what’s a little bit forgettable and perhaps could be cut. So yeah, a great way to rehearse a talk is to assemble a trial audience, do it out loud.
People often ask us how they should rehearse their talks. The first thing you need to do is to give yourself time, even when you’ve already got your script ready, you still need time to practise. We recommend at least three times all the way through, so that you’re comfortable with the material and in particular, you can make sure that those very first seconds, when you need to grab the audiences attention, have the maximum impact. That’s how to prepare for your talk.
