I’m afraid a very common mistake that we see when we coach people is they come along with presentations, slide decks, which are just way over complicated. And you get the feeling, and often its true, that they’ve reached into their bin of possible slides and they’ve plucked out a few and they’ve cobbled them together in order to make a presentation. So, we’re often encouraging people to think about what’s the logical flow of this slide deck? You know, if you remove all of the pretty pictures and you just look at the titles, do they make logical sense as you read through them? You know, what’s the logical journey that you want to people to go on? Number one. And then number two, how have you brought all that to life? Is it visual or is it pretty text heavy? Ideally, of course, it’s visual. And I think the third thing that often goes wrong is people really muddle up visual aids with takeaways. Now a good takeaway pack is designed to be read on its own, but good visual aids are not so easy to perhaps read on their own but they’re simpler, they’re cleaner, so figuring out the difference between those two is a pretty important trick as well.
What makes a standout pitch deck? Simplicity, make it easy for the audience to understand what you’re offering them, why it matters to them. why your argument is consistent and compelling. Making the complicated simple. That’s a standout pitch deck.
