If you want to create a standout talk, then what I would suggest is try and come up with one big idea. Biggest mistake we see over and over again is that people come up with lots and lots and lots of ideas then string them together. Great talks, great speeches tend to have one big idea that underpins everything. So, spend time looking for that one idea to create a compelling, standout talk.
A standout talk is when you’ve really, really honed in on your audience. And, one of the ways you can really hone in, and it’s really important, is you actually make an emotional connection with them in the first opening seconds, almost, of your talk. You know if you can do that you will have them. I call it the Mark Antony approach, you know, friends, romans, and countryman. It’s actually getting them on side; they’ll be much more receptive to what you have to say.
The ultimate test of a standout talk is do people remember it 24 hours later? We listen to so much at the moment and we, as a result, we forget a huge amount. So, is there something, one or two things in your talk, one or two simple ideas that you really can hope will stand the test of time with your audience? Now, the follow-up challenge is, do you know which ones they are? Do you know what the ideas in your talk are that you really want to stick? That identification of the big messages, the core ideas that people might actually want to take away with them and keep with them and maybe even pass on to other people, that’s one of the hardest bits of this process. And it’s certainly the bit that, as presentation coaches, we spend a lot of time focussing on.
