How Flooding Affects Lives Worldwide
Gideon Mendel's "Drowning World" project shows how flooding really messes up people's lives all over the world.
"Drowning World is my attempt to explore the effects of climate change in an intimate way, taking us beyond faceless statistics and into the individual experiences of its victims."
"Portraits rest at the heart of the project. I often follow my subjects as they return through deep waters, working with them to create an image in their flooded homes. While their pose may be conventional, their environment is disconcertingly altered."
Since 2007, Mendel has been taking up-close pictures of these victims, trying to capture how floods hit hard and change everything in an instant.
The people that mendel picks are just regular everyday people, from different places and backgrounds, to show how floods actually affect their mere existence.
His photos bring out this idea that we're all in this together when it comes to dealing with floods and other natural disasters that are directly the effect of rapid climate change.
He wants us to see that we need to work together to tackle climate change and help those affected by floods. But he also portrays how strong people can be even when things get really tough, with a message of hope and resilience.
For those of us who have been fortunate enough to not be affected by something this drastic, it is our duty to spread awareness about climate change and how to fight it.
I've said it plenty of times before and I'll say it again. PLANT MORE TREES. Just plant em.
That is basically the one and only solution to most of our problems with our future, climate change and global warming. You want to live, not survive. Then make this planet more habitable.
