Urban Africa Is Changing Rapidly
Brad Ogbonna's photography has evolved over the years, reflecting his personal growth and experiences.
He started out inspired by his heritage in Nigeria and expanded his focus to West Africa and the Caribbean, capturing the vibrancy and flair of these regions.
"My grandmother was Fulani, an ethnic group that can be found throughout West Africa, primarily in Senegal. We never had a chance to meet so I’ve always felt a deep curiosity about her background and a natural connection to the Fula people and the lands in which they inhabit.
I started visiting Senegal five years ago and have visited each year since then. On my first visit I was immediately drawn to the kindness of the people and the warmth of Dakar, the capital city. This ongoing series has been an exploration in learning more about that side of my background"
As Ogbonna's career progressed, he began to explore more personal themes in his photography.
Following the death of his father, he used visual narrative as a way to sustain a dialogue with his late father and examine his own life.
“One of the defining characteristics of the regions is the amount of colour on display. From the home exteriors and interior decor to the clothing people wear,” Brad says. “That’s what I’m looking for when I’m creating imagery. The love of colour and warmth that I don’t often find stateside.”
Ogbonna has maintained a raw and natural aesthetic, often shooting with a wide aperture to blur out the background and focus on the person or subject.
His photography continues to be influenced by his travels and experiences, offering a nuanced perspective on the beauty and warmth of the places he visits.
