The Stone Stuck Between Two Mountains In Norway
Kjeragbolten, a Boulder stuck between a crevice on Norway's Kjerag mountain.
It's basically a 5-cubic-meter glacial boulder suspended above a 984 metres above sea level.
Accessing Kjeragbolten is difficult. You have to do a 12 km round trip hike with a 570-meter climb, which requires 6 to 8 hours to complete.
It is located on the southern shores of Lysefjorden and the closest place is Lysebotn, an isolated village only accessible by only one road or just by boat.
It is believed that the Kjerag boulder got stuck between the 2 rock faces sometime during the last ice age around 50,000 B.C.
In one particular place just before you reach the top of the Kjerag mountain, you can sometimes hear a sound similar to that of a gunshot and see smoke coming out of the mountain. Nobody knows for sure what the phenomenon is caused by, but it is believed that it is due to water being forced out of the mountain.
Beyond its geological significance, Kjeragbolten is a popular tourist destination and an exhilarating spot for BASE jumpers.
