Developing Leadership to Fast-Track Your Career
This morning I met with a client who is on a fast track in his career. He’s bright. He’s motivated. He works hard. He has great rapport with his boss and his clients. He sees the need and how to meet it quickly and communicates it easily. But even with all of this wind in his sails, he still finds that he’s got some drag he didn’t expect: His team.
Peer leadership is something that's often overlooked in our development. Our guy has often been the knight in shining armor at work, swooping in and solving problems and directing the team to follow his lead. But now he sees that this isn’t the only strategy and that it doesn’t always work.
What’s cool about him is that he’s willing to learn, to adapt. In this case, that means he is learning how to pay attention to the concerns of his peers and empowering them to think through what they need to be successful. And at the same time, he's discovering, in our sessions, some of his own skill gaps, areas that he's not so confident about. And he's learning that he can actually ask his teammates to have his back and that he can say, “Hey, who can help me with this? This is something I'd rather not get into.”
This work is not easy, but it is necessary in order to authentically develop. I'm sure he's going to feel annoyed upfront, but he is learning how to ease into some of the deeper feelings underneath that annoyance and to feel some tenderness with his teammates.
