Interviewing over zoom. How to really connect.
Someone I met with this morning said that given their interview is over video conference they were afraid of not knowing if they were doing well. How would they know if they were really connecting to their interviewer?
I understand the concern. You can’t really make eye contact and you can only see so much of someone’s body language and so social queues may be missing.
This does not change the first rule of interviewing, which is that you interview the interviewer.
Your mindset is still the most important thing.
Remember not to simply list off what you know. You want to make sure you and the person you’re talking to are really on the same page. Asking them questions is one of the best ways to do this.
I take inspiration from Mr. Rogers on this. He was really curious about others. He was able to look into a camera and make deep and meaningful contact with millions of people. If you can be a little more like Mr. Rogers in your interviews, it will go a long way. For more, check out an article I posted about this when the pandemic began.
