One of the things I work on with people is transitions in their careers, and this guy that I'm coaching recently accepted a promotion in his company. That is always exciting news, but we want to make sure that he takes advantage of that transition period so that he sets himself up well in the new position. Promotion is a sign of success but not a guarantee of it.
The first thing we wanted to address was that one of the partners wasn't happy with the move. Rather than assuming this reflected badly on him as an employee, he approached the partner to talk it out. He found out that the partner doesn't want him to leave the position he’s in because he's useful. He's really good. It's going to be a loss for that spot. If he hadn't met and talked that through, he might have lost that relationship, when the basis of the partner’s objection was his talent!
The position itself presents new challenges for him as well. He's got this kind of stoic attitude, this old model of manhood, where he hasn’t shown his emotions much. But the position depends a lot on engagement. He's got people there who want his affirmation, but he's not used to giving that back out. You see, he didn’t get a lot of that growing up, so his first impulse is to be cautious, to not be vulnerable. What that also means is that he is closing off opportunities to be celebrated. He has to allow himself to delight in the fact that people want him, and that means becoming vulnerable. In many facets of leadership, vulnerability turns out to be a crucial ingredient. This is just one example.
I hope that you find something useful in what I shared today. Cheers.
