In August (2024), the team gathered to pass a 5 miles (7.5 kilometers) trail full of rappelling, diving, climbing and... fun! The freezing cold waters quenched my baked summertime body. The bravest of us wore wetsuit shorts. I took a step further and only wore a normal cotton t-shirt on my upper body to make those who were cold, feel it even deeper in their bones (gangsta an' sheit yo!). The first day was spent by driving to the location. We spent the night in the forest while listening to some owls as a lullaby. We woke up early in the morning and passed through a local village to enter the trail that would lead us to the starting point of the canyon. Once there, we prepared our gear (harness, carabiners, bags, wetsuits, ropes etc) and started the descend. Over the years, the flowing water has eaten up the rocks and formed very tall cliffs on both sides of the water. The rappelling points in front of us were too many (40) but nothing too technical was required. Also, the water was lesser than previous years. That made things easy, but it is also an environmental concern for this location. This place felt like a pre-historic cave. The thick jungle above us would leave hanging vegetation reach us. It was "raining" from the gathered moisture from all sides. Seeing the rock formations as they were shaped over millions of years is like a time machine. Canyoning is an extreme sport that is worth it 100% to experience. After many hours of adventuring in the freezing waters we spotted the exit. Finally we were seeing the sun again and the rest of the road was flat and easy to walk on. We walked across the main river of the valley to reach our camping site. A good meal was a MUST after what we did. We slept for the night, had some nice cramps to wake me up, and woke up the third day to have fun without any exhausting activities. We felt like swimming in frozen waters again and we fully enjoyed it. A nice meal followed, and then drove home for the rest of the day.
Unfortunately a friend who has been a member of the team; lost the battle with his own mind and did something that has no return. May this video serve as a little memorial for those left behind.
