Summertime PT at the mountains!
As always, Andrew Liosis leads the way in extreme sports. Only two days after our 3 miles (5 kilometers) mountain run, we decided to attempt a difficult climb on a mountain top, and then run all the way around the peaks to reach the starting point. It was still August and the temperature reached 102 F (39 C) under shade. When you are surrounded by a white-ish rocky environment, the temperature is greatly increased (not that red rocks don't have the same effect). Everything is reflecting the solar rays and the stone becomes a furnace. But what kind of infantrymen are we if that will discourage us? Burning sh*t mixed with diesel in AF has trained us to embrace the suck and be happy about it. The first step is to move up one klick (kilometer) to enter the very difficult steep slope trail. It is a very sharp angled path, aiming straight up. It has a staircase to be climbed by the brave. This path is between 800 meters and 1 kilometer. It has an elevation of 1 kilometer altitude from that starting point. As you may imagine, the uphill angle is always 45 degrees. There was no shade all the way up, nor any refreshing breeze. No matter, we reached the top and it was time to run around the mountains, all the way down to our starting point. Obviously we were exhausted at the end, and burned up. But we survived like always. This isn't the hardest thing we have ever done, but it has a special place in our hearts none the less.
