Spade Bits are used for boring hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, and drywall. Spade drill bits are much faster than auger bits, although augers have higher material removal rate. Auger bits are designed in such a way that they can remove material more efficiently than spade bits while drilling. Using our Photron Nova S12 high speed camera to capture the action of the bit using a bench press drill, we can see the cutting action at tip of the bit. When pressing the lever down on the drill press, the cutting edge rotates and is pressed into the wood along the shear plane line.
