Hey, come on in, everybody! I'm Slushy, and in this video I'm going to talk about entering a pixel art game contest and I'll show you my entry and you can watch how I made it!
OrangePixel, the studio behind the upcoming open-world platforming game called Residual, is holding a contest of sorts. Everyone is allowed to participate, and you can enter the contest multiple times if you want! I only created one tileset, so I only entered once. But keep watching to see how I did it!
Game development contests, in my opinion, are usually not worth the time and the risk. Making a game takes a TON of time, often in the span of weeks for small games. When you enter your game into one of the usual game dev contests I've seen over the years, you typically forfeit your rights to the game, so if you don't end up winning any prizes, you're basically left with nothing to show for all of your work.
This OrangePixel contest is a bit different. It's not technically a game "development" contest, because you aren't developing a game. Instead, it's really a pixel art contest, because what you'll be doing is creating artwork that will appear inside a commercially released game (if you get chosen!).
So, take a look and you can watch how I did it, and maybe this will inspire some of you to try to enter the contest! Or maybe it will inspire you to try to make some pixel art. In the future, I will release a video showing my artwork inside Residual (if I get selected!), or I will release a video showcasing everyone else who got selected. Either way, check back soon for more!
