Margarita
INGREDIENTS:
60ml Patron Silver Tequila
15ml Patron Citronge
30ml Lime Juice
GARNISH: Salt Rim
GLASSWARE: Coupe / Martini
METHOD: Shake & Strain
ALCOHOL: Tequila
HOW TO:
Step 1 – Prepare a cocktail glass with a Salt Rim by running a lime wedge across the outside rim of the glass and dunking it in a plate of salt flakes. Use the highest quality salt available.
Step 2 – Remove any excess or unwanted salt flakes by wiping the inside of the glass with a clean cocktail napkin
Step 3 – Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker
Step 4 – Fill shaker with ice and seal
Step 5 – Shake until all ingredients are mixed and chilled
Step 6 – Strain into the prepared salt rimmed cocktail glass
Margarita
The first real tequila cocktail, and still the best, there are many stories as to its provenance. The name means Daisy in Spanish. Like so many other Latin drinks (and sours) a mix of spirit, citrus juice and sugar; as always the freshness of the juice is critical.
One story accredits it to American socialite Margaret Sames who served it to her guests in Acapulco in the 1940’s (including Nicky Hilton), saying that she didn’t like either weak drinks or weak men. Another describes how Daniel Negrete of the Garci Crespo Hotel in Puebla, Mexico invented it in 1936 for his girlfriend Margarita, who insisted on eating salt with everything she drank. Yet another story tells that it was served to actress Marjorie King by Danny Herrera at Rancha La Gloria in Tijuana, since she was allergic to every spirit apart from tequila.
The use of agave syrup is a little contentious, based on the recipe used at Tommy’s in San Francisco by Julio Bermejo, but adds a greater agave flavour and richness to the drink.
