Are we training for behavior change? Or are we training to just accomplish a task? All together now: Movements are behaviors that we’re trying to reinforce.
In this specific case the athlete has been cued to do the right thing to get the maximum hop, but the flexed foot landing prompts the question around how we’re teaching athletes to jump and land.
When an athlete is in the air we want butts squeezed and toes pointed because it cues global extension so the athlete can absorb force and land. Toes flexed tightens the quads and shortens the position. (Note that landing – athlete falls over.) Friendly reminder that the gym is not just about physiologic adaption (stronger muscles, improved conditioning, etc.), it’s also very much about coordination and practice.
