Train fares are set to go up for the first time in 29 years. Reports say a board meeting on Tuesday yielded several proposals, with price hikes aiming to achieve a return on investment of between 3% and 5%. The Taiwan Railway Union has voiced support for the adjustment, calling for the fare changes to be implemented in one go. Let’s hear from the union.
Chu Chih-yu
Taiwan Railway Union
We fully support a fare increase. We at the labor union believe that if the fares have to be adjusted, they should go up to their final rate in one go. The last time the price was adjusted was almost 30 years ago. If the increase isn’t substantial enough, we don’t see how Taiwan Railway will keep going for another 30 years.
Chen Shih-kai
Transport minister
I think we still need to consider how the public will react to the hike, especially since we want to encourage the use of public transport. The increases have to be such that the public finds them acceptable.
The proposal from Taiwan Railways will have to be reviewed by a pricing committee at the transport ministry before it is submitted to the Executive Yuan for approval.
