Due to the impact of global warming, the annual output of Taiwan’s shiitake mushrooms has continuously declined, taking a nose dive from NT$8.66 billion in 2018 to just under NT$6.62 billion in 2023. To raise competitiveness, the Xinshe Farmers’ Association has signed an MOU with Japan’s Mori Industries and First Super, a leading retailer of Japanese food products. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Hu Jong-I witnessed the signing.

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture Hu Jong-I witnessed Xinshe Farmers’ Association Secretary-General Lo Wen-cheng sign a memorandum of understanding with Mori Industries representative Mori Yuichiro and First Super’s general manager, Wang Wei-chun, who facilitated the connection.

Through Taiwan-Japan collaboration, the two sides will seek solutions together. Personnel from Taiwan and Japan will have the opportunity to visit each other and exchange technologies, enhancing Taiwan’s competitiveness.

Hu Jong-I
Deputy Minister of Agriculture
We hope that through this collaboration between Taiwan and Japan, we can jointly develop new varieties and improve management practices. This will help enhance our management techniques and also lead to the development of heat-resistant new varieties.

Mori Yuichiro
Mori Industries director
By increasing the shiitake mushroom production in Taichung’s Xinshe, we aim to boost the income of our mushroom farmers and advance the industry. I also look forward to developing a heat-resistant variety through our joint research and development efforts in the future.

The ideal temperature for shiitake mushrooms is between 20°C to 30°C. However, due to the impact of global warming, the annual output value of Taiwan’s shiitake mushrooms, which was NT$8.66 billion in 2018, plunged to just under NT$6.62 billion in 2023. Additionally, the production of mushroom growing bags has also dropped by 100 grams.

Wang Wei-chun
First Super general manager
They are interested in visiting Taiwan’s shiitake mushroom farms, so we have specifically arranged for them to visit Xinshe. Additionally, Mori Industries will have the opportunity to host a delegation led by Secretary-General Lo of the Xinshe Farmers’ Association at their headquarters, where they can learn more about shiitake mushroom technology in Japan.

Taiwan will introduce Japan’s heat-resistant mushroom strains and develop new varieties suitable for Taiwan’s climate to increase income for farmers.
