The 13th tropical storm of the year, Bebinca, officially formed last night at 8 p.m. It is expected to move northwest, passing through the Ryukyu Islands, then head straight for Zhejiang, China. Whether it’ll affect Taiwan depends on the strength of the high-pressure systems over the Pacific.

From the Sept. 14 to Sept. 16, Tropical Storm Bebinca will begin to gradually approach the northern part of Taiwan’s waters. During this period, as it remains over the more northern sea areas, the typhoon’s circulation could bring some rainfall to Northern Taiwan, and areas like Matsu, Kinmen, and even Penghu.

On Wednesday, the weather will still be dominated by afternoon thunderstorms, but starting on Thursday, moisture will gradually increase. As the storm moves closer, the period from Sunday to next Monday will see the greatest impact. Although the storm isn’t expected make landfall, the eastern half of the island and the Greater Taipei area will experience significant rainfall due to its periphery.
