FLOOR LAMP OF EXOTIC WOOD SPECIES

My friend Jeff (who also built my house) called one day and said he had a round steel fence post with a base plate – did I want it? Sure I did.
Then I just designed the lamp around the original shape. I always wanted to make something that made use of all the exotic wood I’d talked myself into buying over the years. Plus, I was able to use almost all of my tools – saws, routers, lathe, sanders, grinders, etc. all in one project. I really love this lamp!
HOW LONG TO MAKE: 110 hours. (2017)
HARDEST PART(s): Sourcing the rare wood, shaping, sanding and finishing
HOW MANY PIECES: Over one hundred.
MATERIALS: 36 different wood species from all over the world. Some very expensive! Total cost of wood was about $650.
COMMENTS: All my own invention and design
• Yes, I really did cut everything by hand.
• No, I didn’t have plans or patterns or a kit. I designed it as I went along
• I am told the colorful woods will all eventually fade toward brown.
• I used two coats of shellac and at least 3 coats of polycrylic on top of that.
