Oh my god. Clannad. Where do I even begin with Clannad????! I think it might be the most wholesome yet soul crushingly depressing thing I have ever watched in my entire life. But it's so fucking good. It left a really deep impression on me. It was so much deeper than I expected it to be. And it's definitely one of my favorite series of all time.
To summarize, Clannad is about a boy named Tomoya Okazaki and a girl named Nagisa Furukawa. Tomoya comes from a broken home life (his mother died when he was young and he has an estranged relationship with his father because of abuse). He doesn't really care about anyone or anything. Nagisa is the opposite. She has loving and supportive parents. She's very meek and shy. She has an unknown illness that happens in spells that make her weak and bedridden (a HUGE plot point in the story). Because of that, she missed school and has to repeat a year. She is a year older than Tomoya, but they're in the same grade. They meet on the street one day on their way to school. They become unlikely friends who eventually fall in love, get married, and have a baby. There's so much pure wholesome domestic fluff between them. There's also a lot of slice of life drama and pain that will absolutely rip your heart out. But the plot is actually so much deeper than that and there's even some supernatural shit that is hard to explain without watching it. And I don't want go into a long winded description that no one is gonna read. Just know that Nagisa dies after giving birth to their daughter, Ushio. And there are two timelines and characters come back to life and get their happy ending.
So Clannad was on my watchlist for awhile. I'd heard it was one of the saddest anime ever. And since I love watching emotionally draining shit, I'd eventually get around to it. But what sold me to move it up though my list is that David Matranga (my favorite dub voice actor I LOVE HIM) plays the main protagonist (Tomoya) in the English dub. Yes, I watched it in dub. But I watched some scenes in Japanese (mostly all the soul crushingly painful ones). But the dub is really good.
I wracked my brain for awhile to find the perfect song for Tomoya and Nagisa, but kept coming back to this one. Anime is giving me inspiration to vid all these songs I've had saved for years but didn't know what to vid them with. I did cry while making this. I think Tomoya and Nagisa might be one of my top favorite ships of all time. Not just in anime, but in anything ever. The growth that Tomoya goes through is top tier. And while her character development is not as grandiose as Tomoya's, Nagisa is just so kindhearted and positive. I adore them so much, as a couple and as their own characters. Amazing performances by David Matranga and Luci Christian. I'll definitely be making more Clannad videos.
