Who Was the 501st COMMANDER during the Clone Wars?
We all love Captain Rex, but he was always just that, a Captain, and not a Clone Commander, which ranks higher than Captain. Why did Rex have so much authority? Find out with us in this video.
Did it ever occur to you that Captain Rex, was just that… a captain, and not a commander? The actual Clone Commander of the 501st Legion, is not mentioned until CT- 1119, AKA Appo, assumed command after the Battle of Umbara. However, despite still being just a Captain, Rex still had authority over the Legion, as many clones admired him, including Appo himself. In the final chapters of the Age of the Republic, there were two events that happened at the same time that called for the 501st Legion to be divided. The 501st, led by Anakin Skywalker, went to defend Coruscant during the Seperatist invasion, and the newly formed 332nd Company, led by Ahsoka Tano and the newly promoted Commander Rex, went to defend Mandalore during the Invasion of Maul and the Shadow Collective. This was the only time Rex was a commander, and it was short lived, as soon after the successful thwart of Maul and his army, Darth Sidious gave the command of Order 66, and the Galaxy changed forever.

A standard squad of clones consists of 9 soldiers. This squad is commanded by one sergeant. One lieutenant commands 4 sergeants. One captain commands 4 lieutenants. And finally, one commander commands 16 captains. That brings our total number of clone troopers in one legion up to 2,329.
