This simple breathing aid is designed to help your nervous system shift from fight/flight to calm — and yes, you can download it to keep on your phone if you find it helpful.
It’s part of a series of breathing tools I’ve created to help you reset, anytime, anywhere.
🔁 Extra tip: Right-click the video and hit “Loop” to keep it going in the background while you breathe.
Often used by military and emergency responders to stay steady under pressure, this is a go-to method for down-regulating adrenaline and activating the parasympathetic system.
Visual types? Imagine drawing around a box as you breathe — four sides, four counts each.
Feeling a bit wobbly to start with?
You can try counting to three instead of four until it feels easier. With practice, you might stretch to five or six.
How to do it:
1️⃣ Breathe in through your nose while counting to four slowly. Feel the air enter your lungs.
2️⃣ Hold your breath inside while counting slowly to four. Try not to clamp your mouth or nose shut. Simply avoid inhaling or exhaling for 4 seconds.
3️⃣ Begin to slowly exhale for 4 seconds.
4️⃣ Hold again for 4 counts.
🔁 Repeat at least 3 times — or keep going for 4 minutes, or until your system softens.
