Little Reds are possibly the most contentious flying-fox species in Australia as they travel around the country feasting on native blossom.
They arrive at feeding locations in large numbers sometimes exceeding 100,000 individuals and depending on where they settle, conflict with humans is inevitable.
The good news is that Reds only stay for the duration of the flowering and once flowering is on the decline, they pack up camp and move to a new location.
The movements of Little Red flying-foxes vary from year to year depending on large flowering events but generally speaking they arrive in our area in October/November and they stay until around March before travelling north to winter and give birth.
As such, we rarely get Little Reds orphans in care and if one does come in, there is much excitement and a sense of great privilege to be able to raise such a special little bat.
The orphan in the video is Miss Ruby and she was raised and released several years ago with the hope that she is now still flying free and having babies of her own.
ps the honking at the end of the video is Daisy the Bat Dog chewing on her favourite toy duck!
