Pickle Fun Facts
Pickles have been being pickled and eaten for thousands of years. It is thought the first pickle was created in the year 2400BC in Mesopotamia , which makes up modern day Iraq.
One of the most historically world famous pickle eaters was Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. It is said that cleopatra loved eating pickles and that she credited her good looks in part to her pickle consumption. Another famous historic pickle eater was Christopher Columbus who fed pickles to his crew to help prevent scurvy as they voyaged across to ocean to discover new lands.
The exact origin of the word is a bit of a mystery. It may have come from the Dutch word Pekel or the norther German world pokel. The pickle creation process involves placing a vegetable (usually a cucumber) in acidic water or salty brine which is used to pickle the pickle. The brine that is left over after the pickling process is called pickle juice.
When thinking of a cucumber you may automatically consider this to be a vegetable, however according to scientists – the cucumber is actually a fruit. I guess this means that pickles are also a fruit.
Some athletes drink the pickle juice to help rehydrate, it doesn’t sound very tasty to me.
